Zaha Hadid’s Aquatic Centre.

Zaha Hadid’s Aquatic Centre.

On Saturday, we were at the Olympic Park to cheer a friend taking part at the Gay & Lesbian London Aquatic Meet (GLAAM) in the Aquatic Centre designed by Zaha Hadid for the 2012 Olympics.

I had been there in the runner-up of 2012 and the difference is stunning. In contrast to the usual State logic of building something magnificent for a prestigious event, then (at best) convert it into something less beautiful for public usage, in that case it is the other way around.

For the Olympics, the curvaceous Aquatic Centre was unceremoniously flanked (and darkened) by two big sqare boxes – to add rows of seatings. Now they are gone, for all to enjoy the pool in full light and elegance.

Notice also how the 50m Olympic pool can morph into two 25m pools.

A triumph of good architecture!
