U.S. activists are joining their counterparts in the United Kingdom in denouncing the U.K. Supreme Court’s ruling that transgender women aren’t considered women under the nation’s Equality Act.

The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Maryland, and Advocates for Trans Equality have filed amicus briefs at the U.S. Supreme Court supporting a Maryland school district that is preventing students from opting out of reading books with LGBTQ+ themes and characters.

The U.K.’s high court says that only cisgender women fit the legal definition of a woman in the country. In an 88-page decision announced Wednesday, the court’s five judges said the “concept of sex is binary, a person is either a woman or a man.”
