American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost became the new pope on Thursday, selecting the papal name Pope Leo XIV. The first pope from the U.S., Leo is thought to continue some of the reforms made by the late Pope Francis, who died last month.

In a historic and unprecedented move, and a big surprise, the Vatican has elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the first American pope. He will take the name Pope Leo XIV.

Prior to stepping onto the Vatican balcony Thursday as the first American to lead the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV — formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost — was quietly signaling dissent from some of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance’s policies, particularly on immigration.

South Carolina Republican U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace’s anti-trans rhetoric faced sharp scrutiny Wednesday during a House Subcommittee on Government Efficiency hearing that quickly shifted from its stated purpose to partisan attacks on transgender youth.

Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed legislation banning transgender girls and women student-athletes from competing in sports aligned with their gender identity last month. The bill also called for bathrooms, changing and showering facilities, and dormitories to be segregated by a person’s sex assigned at birth.
